Nemaska First Nation Housing - Success in Reducing Rental Arrears

Turtle Island Associates was pleased to participate as a member of Selection Committee for Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation's (CMHC) Housing Awards:"Sharing Successes in Housing for Youth". One of the Award Winners was The Nemaska First Nation. Nemaska is located in James Bay area of northern Quebec, with a population of about 550 people. In an effort to reduce rental payment arrears, the Council introduced a reward system for those tenants who kept their rental payments up to date. The "Zero Balance Club" was initiated. Tenants who made their rental payments every month, and had a zero monthly arrears balance, would qualify for draws for bonuses such as groceries, restaurant meals and hunting equipment. Community members recognize the value of making their rental payments and, the rental arrears for Nemaska are among the lowest in the area.

The Nemaska First Nation Council won a CMHC Housing Award for this, and other housing successes, in their community. Congratulations!
